Beachwood junior John Davis III had a week to remember.
The 5-foot-10 guard scored 86 points in three games to earn Beachwood Bison Athlete of the Week honors.
“Because he has the ball so much in his hands, he’s a leader for us,” said Beachwood head coach Jason Pecjak. “He’s really kind of the face of the program right now. He started out this year struggling a little shooting the ball. We worked on that and he responded this week.”
Davis started his big week on Tuesday, when he scored 22 points in a 67-58 win over Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division foe Hawken. He added 30 on Friday in a 70-48 win at Berkshire then closed out the week on Saturday with a game-high 34 points in a 69-66 loss at St. Edward.
Beachwood held a one-point lead over St. Edward at halftime but the Eagles rallied in the third quarter and outscored the Bison, 23-11.
Davis dominated the fourth quarter and nearly led the Bison to the upset victory over The Plain Dealer’s third-ranked team.
“He was the best player on the floor,” Pecjak said. “They did everything they could, but they couldn’t stop him.”
Davis hit three 3-pointers and nine free throws in the game.
“He just had it in his mind he was going to get to the rim. He played really physical and just overpowered guys. It was exciting to watch,” Pecjak said. “If he didn’t score, he got to the free throw line.”
Through 10 games, Davis has been Beachwood’s leading scorer seven times.
The Bison are 8-2 on the year and return to action on Friday when they travel to Fairport Harding.
