Beachwood swimmers Kevin Yu and Sanford Hong have been named Beachwood Bison Athletes of the Week for the week of January 21, 2013.
Yu, an eighth grader, won the 50-yard butterfly (29.26) and 50-yard backstroke (30.86) and also swam on two winning relays in Tuesday’s meet in a 309-211 win over Westlake. He carries a 4.0 grade point average and has been a member of the Beachwood Swim Club for three years.
“He is a leader in his commitment and work ethic alone,” said Beachwood swim coach Brad Burget.
It’s that commitment to the sport that has allowed Yu to steadily improve.
“Kevin’s always been a pretty good swimmer,” Burget said. “He’s always been someone who has been committed and ready to work.”
Yu plays the violin and performs the National Anthem at all high school and middle school meets.
Hong, an eighth grader, also won his individual events, the 50-yard freestyle (27.30) and 50-yard breaststroke (33.64), and was part of two winning relay teams in the win over Westlake.
“Sanford has been our most improved swimmer over his past two years with the Beachwood Bison Swim Club and also is a leader in his commitment and work ethic,” Burget said. “He’s come a long way. Three years ago we were actually teaching him how to swim.”
Hong, also versed in playing the violin, has joined Yu in several pre-game anthem performances.
Yu and Hong were part of the 200-yard medley relay team and the 400-yard freestyle relay team. The 200 relay team finished with a meet-best time of 2:07.04 and the 400 squad finished first with a time of 4:15.95.
